UPDATE: Reanna Lee, 27, of Aurora has been charged with 1 count of Misdemeanor Carrying Concealed Gun.

Lee is the parent of the 2-year-old and the owner of the diaper bag where the weapon was found.

The District Attorney's Office was consulted by the River Bend Police Department prior to charging Lee.

River Bend police reported Monday a staff member at Excel Learning Center found a handgun inside the daycare, prompting a statement from the center detailing the event.

A representative from the daycare, located at 440 Pirates Road, said a parent brought a bag into a classroom and placed it on a countertop, out of reach of the children.

While searching for supplies, a teacher discovered a gun inside the diaper bag. River Bend police confirmed no one was hurt.

According to the daycare’s website, the center opens at 6:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. The representative said the teacher found the weapon within an hour of the child’s arrival, and staff immediately contacted the police to report the incident.

“A personal firearm was discovered in a diaper bag by staff at Excel Creative Learning Center on Monday morning. The bag was brought by a parent to the center as part of routine child drop-off procedures. The bag was left on top of a counter and thereby out-of-reach to children in the classroom. Within one hour of the child’s arrival, a teacher discovered the firearm when searching the bag for needed supplies.

While the finding appeared to be unintentional and non-threatening, the incident was immediately reported to local police who stepped in to manage the situation quickly. The incident is currently under investigation by River Bend Police who will provide ongoing updates.

The safety and security of children and staff is the highest priority and concern for Excel Creative Learning Center. Excel regularly evaluates safety procedures to meet the evolving needs of regulatory and technological advancement. Additionally, Excel strictly upholds its policies to foster a safe community of families and staff, which can include parting ways with individuals where trust of judgment has been breached.” - Nia Grace, Spokesperson for Excel Creative Learning Center
